Holywood Writers
Yesterday my visiting cousin's family and mine toured the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank.
If you're ever in Southern California, skip the Universal studios' tour which is really just an amusement park ride and head straight over to the nice folks and WB for a real insiders tour.
The tour groups are small, only twelve of us, and intimate.
We walked down the back lots and heard entertaining stories about the tour guide's experiences with Clint Eastwood.
We walked through the costume department and stood right next to the original costumes worn by Wonder Woman, James Dean and even saw the crucifix from The Exorcist.
We stood on a real live sound stage and learned that one of the things actors never talk about is the 105-degree conditions they work under due to the intense camera lights.
But my favorite part (and it was a very small part) was the section of the tour dedicated to the writers.
It got me pondering the fact that the writers are the unsung heroes of Hollywood.
Think about it.
How many screenwriters names do you know?
How many do I know?
Not many.
Writers are the lifeblood of the movie biz because without great writers the actors have nothing to perform.
It's funny because very few people watch a movie and think, "Wow! That was a great line of dialogue the writer thought up." Or, "Gee, I loved the way the writer surprised me with that midpoint reversal." Or, "OMG! Way to go with the dark moment!"
I do.
That's why in my next lifetime I've decided to incarnate as Vince Gilligan, the head writer of Breaking Bad.
